Chinese Mineral Pigment Painting
Experience the beauty and depth of mineral painting, designed for beginners and art enthusiasts alike.
Discover an art form that has flourished for over a thousand years in China. From imperial courts to Buddhist grottoes, mineral painting carries a rich legacy in every hue.
Chinese mineral painting, or “Yan Cai”, is like a condensed history of Chinese civilisation, ancient yet vibrant. It is not a modern invention, but a painting tradition practiced by our ancestors for thousands of years. In simple terms, mineral painting uses ground gemstones and minerals such as lapis lazuli, malachite, and turquoise mixed with animal glue and applied to various surfaces.
The pigments are rich and textured, producing vibrant colours that refract light, giving artworks a luminous, three-dimensional quality full of life.
Origins and Glory: From Prehistoric Rock Art to the Tang Dynasty
Prehistoric to Han Dynasty: From painted Neolithic pottery to tomb murals in the Qin and Han periods, mineral painting began taking shape, recording life and belief with vibrant colours.
Wei, Jin to Sui and Tang Dynasties: This was the golden age. With the spread of Buddhism and the Silk Road trade, precious pigments such as azurite and cinnabar flowed in from the West, enriching the colour palette. Today’s masterpieces like Dunhuang murals, Kizil grottoes, and works by masters like Wu Daozi and Zhou Fang reflect this brilliance. Tang dynasty techniques like gongbi heavy colour and blue-green landscapes elevated the art form to its peak.
